“You can study form, and you can study rhythm, but you can’t learn both simultaneously.”
—said every calligraphy teacher I’ve ever had.
Building on past lettering meetups, we will take deep dives into our lettering practice by taking the time to hone in on lettering details you won’t get from reading books, watching you tube videos or practicing on your own.
Starting with a foundation of form, we will explore the 4 marker tips Neuland has to offer and answer the question: “What is this tool designed for and what else can it do?”
We will take it to the next level by learning the tradecraft of identifying and mimicking lettering styles.
Each marker tip has it’s own way of making marks. By understanding the attributes and adding your artistic hand, you will find ways to develop your own style and/or copy other lettering styles.
And if you thought learning a few new tricks was enough, you will walk away with resources, awesome swag, and secrets to making lasting lettering improvements—ways to continually take your lettering to the next level.
Lefties are welcome!
• Your sketchbook and
• Your favorite markers to practice with and to take notes.
We will also work large at the wall. Paper and “community” markers will be provided. You can also purchase Neuland markers the night of the class.
Light refreshments, including bagels and coffee, will be provided. Feel free to bring your lunch.
