During the gallery walk at a recent World Cafe on healthcare reform, one of the participants commented to me, "All meetings should be recorded this way! This is so much more interesting than just writing ideas down." I agree.
I've worked in business for over 30 years and I see a problem with how meetings are conducted and information is recorded. Word documents and Visio diagrams are just so boring. Capturing ideas with pictures is a much more powerful way to communicate. A visual record also ensures that participants all agree on the content because everyone is seeing the same information at the same time.
I especially enjoy recording meetings in a series. Carrying a visual record forward from previous meetings energizes the group, helps ensure continuity of ideas, and stimulates deeper conversations. It also enables anyone who missed a prior meeting to quickly and completely catch up with the group – everyone is literally on the same page.
