| Introduction |

We have all experienced the malaise: the meeting, conference, training or retreat where people are half-engaged, checking their phones continually, or completely checked out. Visual thinking is one antidote to that syndrome. When ideas are illustrated in words and pictures, in real-time, people become present. The reason is simple, they are being heard, can make connections, and can see that progress is being made. And isn’t that what all of us really want?
My background includes both the people-process design and artistic design with a strong foundation in environmental sustainability and education. I first discovered visual thinking in my graduate program in Organizational Systems Renewal in the early ‘90’s. In those days I was working in sustainability at the USEPA with various stakeholder groups along with doing training with people from other countries. We found that working visually helped everyone stay on the same page, see connections and move forward.
